Every practice in Back to Self carries one of four labels. This page lists what each label rests on, in plain text — author, year, title, journal — with no external links required to read it.

Journalling

Writing about difficult thoughts and feelings, rather than avoiding them, is one of the more studied practices in psychology. The foundational work was done by James Pennebaker and Sandra Beall at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1980s: participants who wrote about a genuinely upsetting experience for fifteen minutes across a few consecutive days later made fewer visits to the health centre than those who wrote about something trivial. That single study opened a large body of research that followed, generally finding modest but real benefits to physical and emotional health from this kind of writing.

Breathing practices

Slow, controlled breathing (roughly under ten breaths a minute) has been studied for its effect on the autonomic nervous system — the part of the body that governs the fight-or-flight response and its opposite, rest and recovery. A 2018 systematic review pulled together the available research and found that slow breathing techniques tend to shift the body toward the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") state, measurable through increased heart rate variability, and are associated with reduced anxiety in the studies reviewed.

Movement

The relationship between physical movement and mood is one of the most consistently replicated findings in mental health research. A 2016 meta-analysis pooling randomised controlled trials found a meaningful antidepressant effect from exercise, particularly when supervised and consistent — though the authors were careful to note that publication bias inflates some earlier estimates, and their adjusted figures were more conservative than earlier headlines suggested.

Traditional practice

Kundalini yoga and meditation.

The Kundalini yoga and meditation techniques in this programme come from a living lineage taught by Yogi Bhajan and carried forward by the Kundalini Research Institute (KRI). This is fundamentally different from the evidence base above: it is a tradition of practice refined over decades of teaching, not a set of techniques originated in a lab.

That said, some Kundalini-specific protocols have been studied directly. Psychiatrist David Shannahoff-Khalsa ran two clinical trials at the University of California, San Diego testing a Kundalini yoga protocol for obsessive-compulsive disorder, including a randomised controlled trial that found meaningful symptom improvement compared to a relaxation and mindfulness meditation control group. Separately, a pilot randomised trial by Jindani, Turner and Khalsa found reduced PTSD symptoms following an eight-session Kundalini yoga intervention.

These are specific, small trials on specific protocols for specific conditions — they are evidence that Kundalini practices can be studied rigorously, not a blanket claim that every practice in this programme has been clinically trialled. It hasn't. We say so plainly rather than implying otherwise.

Interesting, not yet settled.

Some practices in this programme — reflective and perspective-shifting work of the kind used in Day 11, and certain visualisation-based energy practices — draw on ideas with early, promising research behind them, but not yet the weight of evidence the categories above carry. We use this badge to say plainly: interesting, not yet settled.

A note on what this means for Back to Self

Back to Self itself — the programme as a whole, this specific sequence of fourteen days — has not been through a clinical trial. The research above describes the general practice categories (expressive writing, slow breathing, movement, and in some cases Kundalini yoga specifically), not a claim that this particular app has been studied or validated. We think that's an important distinction, and we'd rather say it plainly than let the evidence badges imply more than they mean.
